Solheim Cup 2011

Dunshaughlin & District welcomes the 2011 Solheim Cup to Killeen Castle, from 23rd to the 25th September. This international event features 12 of the top European players from the Ladies European Tour (LET) and 12 top American players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA).

The Solheim Cup is a biennial trans-Atlantic team match-play golf tournament for professional women golfers.  It is contested by teams representing Europe and the United States and includes the best US born players from the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and the best European golfers from the Ladies European Tour (LET). It is named after Karsten Solheim, who was the driving force in developing the tournament.

The inaugural Cup was held in 1990.  The US team is selected by a points system, with American players on the LPGA Tour receiving points for each top-twenty finish on tour. For the European team, since 2007, only the top five players from the LET will qualify and another four will be selected on the basis of the Women’s World Golf Rankings. In addition, each team has a number of “captain’s picks”, players chosen at the discretion of the team captains, regardless of their point standings, though in practice the captain’s picks are often the next ranking players.

The cup is played over three days – eight foursomes, eight four-balls and 12 singles on the final day. This is the same format of the Ryder Cup.

Team Captains

Alison Nicholas will return as Europe’s captain for the 2011 Solheim Cup taking place at Killeen Castle, County Meath, Ireland. Annika Sorenstam and Joanne Morley have been selected as vice-captains for The 2011 European Solheim Cup Team by Captain Alison Nicholas.  U.S. Solheim Cup Team Captain Rosie Jones has chosen Juli Inkster and Sherri Steinhauer as Assistant Captains.
